and here is yet another Personal history entry only 22 more to go
The Cabin
My Mother’s parents jointly owned a cabin in Provo Canyon right above Sundance. This cabin is forever anchored in my memory as a place where my family could go to get some relief from the world. Built in the 70’s the cabin was decorated accordingly. With a bright orange door, green plaid curtains and dark purple carpet in the upstairs bedrooms, this place was not exactly one of beauty. My family would go to the cabin mainly during the fall and occasionally in the summer. It always smelled so fresh up there like dead leaves and dirt, the sweet pungent smell of fallen aspen leaves. Once there we would unpack and make a dinner that was normally consumed on the deck in white lawn chairs. On one such occasion After cleaning up, the boys would build a fire and we would contentedly play spoons or read a book. In our older years these trips to the cabin became far more enjoyable and spoons morphed into “pee spoons” in which whoever lost had to drink a large glass of the ice cold tap water that tasted fresh and clean, whoever had to use the bathroom first lost. No matter what sometime during the course of the weekend all the children would gather in the upstairs bedroom and participate in a rousing game of Truth or Dare. Many fond memories have come from these hours spent in a semi cold bedroom filled with Bates children. I remember on a particularly rowdy day we held a “sibling mosh”, we all jumped on to the queen sized pink bed and bounced around until we heard a crack and we plummeted to the floor. As we assessed the situation it was decided that the only solution was to go down stairs get some firewood and prop the bed back up. When we crept back upstairs with firewood under our shirts our parents laughed and said “looks like the kids are playing truth or dare again”. My unsuspecting parents didn’t realize that we had broken the bed until a few years later when we cleaned out the cabin right before selling it. In the mornings we would have hot chocolate in tea cups and ricotta cheese pancakes. After packing and vacuuming the living room we would take a rock. Over some hills and the slightly amusing speed bumps we would continue on to the river. On a soft bed of needles we would make our way closer noting the depth and speed of the river always changing from year to year, always finding large rocks to drop into the rushing water with a loud plop! We would travel up a ways and as the years passed we experienced disappointment and then anger at the people who built massive “cabins” lining this beautiful part of not only our childhood but my mother’s as well. Before leaving the river we would always toss sticks in and run to the other side of the road to see whos “won” in the racing waters.
In the spring of 2001 both of my Grandparents passed away unexpectedly. Because of its location the cabin was worth quite a sum of money and we didn’t have the assets to purchase the other half of the cabin from the couple that owned it with my grandparents. We had to sell The Cabin. That winter we took out last trip up to the cabin, there was about a foot of snow on the ground and the smell of leaves although there was diluted. That last trip was just as enjoyable as all of the other ones perhaps even more so. As I reflect back on my memories of the cabin I can only think of happy ones. This was a place for my family immediate and extended to gather together and revel in each other’s company.

Happy Thanksgiving!
I am feeling pretty good about my vacation thus far. mary seems to be enjoying herself and that makes me happy. We will be going to my aunts in about an hour to stuff ourselves and then sleep in the mean time here is another entry for my personal history
“And I shall have some peace there for peace comes dropping slow”
My first semester of college was quite stressful. Prior to college I had lived in the same house my entire life, I had never gone to another ward or had a different address or phone number. I was quite content in my little rut. As I experienced all the new faces and places of Rexburg Idaho I longed for some remnant of home. As a searched for some feeling of comfort I stumbled upon a relatively overlooked resource on campus, the Taylor Chapel. I don’t remember the first time I experienced the warmth and comfort I feel every time I enter but I do know that I am now addicted. Every week I try and spend at least two hours in this wonderful place. Without these private hours I think I would be a wreck. I go there to unwind, to read my scriptures and to feel the spirit. When I am aggravated that is the first place I think to go, if I am in need of comfort, if I have a problem this is my solace, the place I feel so close to my Heavenly Father.
Many times I have gone to this place feeling like I just couldn’t handle life anymore the stress and the sadness overwhelming me. When I would sit and ponder or on occasion the moment I would walk in the door I would experience a giant feeling of relief overcome me. As I would sit and cry or think or pray this feeling would remain to comfort and uplift me. The Taylor Chapel is an extremely important aspect of my life at BYU-Idaho. Without it my experiences up here would be completely different and a lot more miserable. I am so thankful for the opportunity to use this wonderful building in such a way. I know that through this holy place I can receive the wisdom, comfort, and guidance I need to make it through college successfully and sanely

A Complicated Tale
So for my english class we have to write a "personal history" which is a little lame in my opinion because i have been writing in this lovely blog for a while now and before that another one and before that Journals but whatever. ANYHOW we have to write about 15 experiences at BYU-Idaho and ten from before college. I Just completed my first one. So here it is.
A Complicated Tale
The second day I was in Rexburg Idaho in the fall of 2005 there was a dance. Before I came to Rexburg I was determined not to attend this reminiscent of high school that I was sure I would loathe. As the dance approached my two friends managed to convince me that it would be a good idea to attend. When the time came to leave my roommate Alli, my cousin Monica and I walked from Chapman Hall up to the playing fields. As we approached the entrance Alli and I realized that we had left the five dollars required to enter at our dorm. Monica kindly offered to pay for me but alas did not have enough for my dear roommate. I quickly thought up a solution. As we walked I became increasingly aware of the three young men behind us, so as we waited I turned around and said “which of you fine men would pay for this lovely young lady to enter the dance?” A young man by the name of Andrew Mitchell volunteered and proceeded to ask her to dance during the course of this event. After the dance he pursued, asked her for our number and by Saturday we all had plans to hang out that night.
As we entered Biddulph Hall lounge my first thoughts were get me the crap out of here. We proceeded to the second floor lounge where we started watching a movie. All of a sudden a young man strolled in the room plopped himself in between us and put his arms around us. I personally was revolted by this and quickly got out of the situation. Alli on the other hand ate it up, and soon they were playing ping pong downstairs. As I sat with these new boys I came to know that they were Scott Bauer, Chris Janikowski, and Dakota Lens, people who I would grow to know and love in the next two semesters. As Andrew fretted over Alli playing ping pong with this new visitor I admonished him to fight for her, and put forth a little more effort. So we all decided to go downstairs, we sat on the couches and commenced talking. Alli and the mystery boy soon joined us and he introduced himself as Jacob Mathew Wood from Winnipeg Canada. I don’t know how or when but he began speaking to me quite candidly about everything under the sun. At one point in the conversation Jacob related something sketchy to me, I can’t remember what, but in response I bopped him on the head with my empty water bottle. This simple act would remain in Jacob’s mind the seemingly defining moment of our first meeting and refused to leave this small detail out to anyone who asked how we met. As midnight approached I did something fiercely out of character: I gave him my telephone number, told him I wanted to be friends, and then left.
Sunday he called, we talked and ended up walking around campus until curfew. Through the course of our conversation we discovered that we both had Sister Heidi Eastman for math 108 at 8:00 in the morning Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Right before he left Jacob said “I will come pick you up tomorrow” and then the phrase I grew to know and love “I’ll phone you later soul sister.” The next day Jacob was outside my door at ten to eight as we had planned, as we walked I remember thinking how I felt like I had known this boy for years. Later in the semester as we studied math in Sister Eastman’s office she asked us how long we had known each other, I detected some surprise when we explained we had only met briefly before classes began that semester.
Throughout the semester Jacob and I became increasingly close although our relationship was completely platonic I feel I was closer to him than I was to the boy I had dated for the six months prior. Jacob was my strength during that first semester. I was struggling with a lot of things and he lifted me up. He was the one who told me I was beautiful and to not pay attention to all those other girls. When I was with Jacob I felt special, we talked about religion, relationships, music, our families, friends, and school.
As winter semester came and went we drifted slightly but he was always there when I needed him. The week before the last time I saw Jacob we argued. He had hurt my feelings in some trivial way, and the boy would not drop it. “We need to talk about it, if we talk it will make things better, you can’t just hold everything in all the time Catherine, it isn’t healthy.” Jacob was never one for dropping things. If there was one thing the boy was, it was persistent. As we hashed out what was bothering me we wandered over to the library minutes before it closed. Once inside we decided to see how long we could hide there. We snuck into the pitch-dark quiet study room in the back of the periodicals section, crawled under some desks and continued our conversation. As the lights outside the room dimmed we gave up and started back towards Chapman Hall. In my journal I wrote about how I felt that night as he dropped me off “as he walked me back to my dorm he asked if I would write to him on his mission and I said of course. he held me so close tonight as he hugged me good bye and wouldn't let me go for a while and all this is how I know that Jacob cares about me. When I walked through the gate I heard him sing "Back pocket tape recorder!' and as I walked up the steps I started to cry I am going to miss that boy so very much he is so very important to me.” That night I knew how much Jacob cared about me and that was a very important moment in my first year at college. This year without him has seemed incredibly odd, his absence has definitely been something I have had to work through. I am so thankful I could meet this wonderful caring intelligent humorous young man.

Sorry for the repeating post down yonder, and tr it took me, no joke, about an hour to figure out why you wrote "groundhog's day" in the comments HA!
so tricia last week convinced megan and I to sign up for a snowshoeing trip this weekend. So friday at 4 we left rexburg and headed to the tetons. I was pretty excited about this trip because on wednesday i found out my favorite professor from last year was chaperoning this little adventure woohoo. So we get up to this cabin and we play some "leadership games" you know the sort "cross the icy snake river with only two blocks of carpet sample to assist you" that kind of thing. Afterwards we ate dinner and then played spoons and other card games. I read my book for a while and then we went to sleep. This morning we got up and ate breakfast then set out on our hike, we didn't snow shoe because it wasn't deep enough so we just hiked around and did some sledding and what not. After that we headed back to rexburg and i feel so rested now, it was such a good experience, i just love tricia and megan so much they are so good to me. I don''t have pictures yet but here are the pictures from Mesa Falls
here we are by the beautiful mesa falls

whoever said idaho wasn't pretty is insane

a wonderful weekend
so cass' friend dane was here this weekend he is really awesome i like him a lot i wish he lived here but alas he is not even Mormon but oh well. On friday we went to dinner and then i went and watched Take the Lead at my friend Neva's house and that was pretty good after that i went and just chilled with everyone and we watched the office some. Saturday was so awesome during the day we just hung out and last night we went to the sand dunes, made a fire played games and roasted marshmallows hot dogs and starbursts. after we came home and just watched a movie and chilled. It was kind of weird i was being kind of flirty with dane this weekend just cause he is fun to mess around with and i think it bugged clint anyhow. Today was Stake Conference so we just had two hours of church this morning then in the afternoon Cass, Tyleen, Katie, Daniel and I went to mesa falls and walked around it was so pretty all covered in snow and what not

it was way fun. On our way back down the mountain we went and walked through this old train tunnel it was pimp i think daniel was annoyed though he intimidates me really bad mostly because he never laughs at me when i crack jokes. This evening clint landin cass melissa and i went to melissa's man J.w.'s house and watched A Christmas Story which was hilarious. after that we came back to our apartment and played cards and drank orange Julius's
clint was being weird extra touchy and what not i went with it but i shouldn't i need to detach myself or december is going to suck really badly i would rather deal with it now then later maybe i can find someone new i am going to miss him so much. alright i am out

Last night seemed especially bad there was much trash talking etc and it ended with two guys not being able to play anymore. So ridiculous if you ask me. well i am off to the races

bad blogger 2
i have been awful i know but i am determined I Will NOT let this blog die!!!!!!!!!!!! the past week has been really good especially in all things concerning Clint. we have hung out a ton lately more than usual i am so glad he is my friend today Elder Oaks talked in devotional today it was an amazing talk it made me feel good and made me want to improve. It was one of those things that you feel like it was just for you he addressed concerns that i had voiced a day prior so wonderful! School has been wonderful and yesterday Clint, Landin and I went to music outlet for the first time this semester it was pretty good i think Clint liked it a lot more than Landin did though. Clint also expressed some interest in seeing some bands play on Saturday so maybe we will do that. So i had this photo project where we had to do black and white pictures and post them on a blog, since i have no desire for my classmates to see this blog i sent them here tell me what you think i know it isn't the best but i like them and now i will bid you all farewell
